Sandra Chan

I was born and raised in Orange County, California. A year after graduating from U.C. Irvine where I was heavily involved as a student leader with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to work for two years as a campus minister with the Stanford University chapter of InterVarsity. I continued to live and work in the Bay Area for the next nine years until I met and married my husband Clarence, a proud Stocktonian, and moved to Stockton in 2005. (Trivia: Although my last name is now Chan because of my Chinese-American husband, don’t be fooled. My heritage is Korean. My paternal grandfather came from Korea to the U.S. in 1910—making 2010 the centennial of my family’s history in America!) I became a Christian when I was 16 years old. But I truly fell in love with the Word of God during my college years with InterVarsity. My church history is mostly with non-denominational congregations, but I am very pleased to have “discovered” the Evangelical Covenant Church since it a good fit for my husband and me—and now my two sons Atticus and Micah. My position on the Church Council is Adult Small Group Ministries. This ministry focuses on nurturing and multiplying (adult) disciples of Jesus Christ in small group settings such as Sunday School and “home groups” where adults gather for scripture study, fellowship, prayer, accountability, and more. I am very excited when I see the Word of God going deep into people’s lives and changing them from the inside out. My hope while I am on the council is to create more opportunities for our church family to grow and mature as individuals and as a congregation as we “do the Bible” together. In addition to small group ministries I am serving/have served with children’s ministries, youth ministries, Veritas, annual all-church retreat and hospitality. If you see me around church and wonder about anything you have read here or omissions, please feel free to ask me. I may be distracted keeping up with my pre-schooler, but I will eventually give you an answer!

I yearn to bring people into the kingdom of God and provide them support as they venture on the personal journey with Jesus.
